STATION GUIDELINES FOR LEGITIMATE E-MAIL

A ByrnesMedia Guest Article

Jerry King

Defining spam has been a problem because no industry group has tackled the issue until now.

The American Assoc. of Advertising Agencies (AAAA), the Assoc. of National Advertisers (ANA), and the Direct Marketing Assoc. (DMA) have finally agreed on what spam is not.

Nine guidelines have been set as standard practice for companies wishing to avoid being labeled spammers. All make sense, and will enhance public perception on marketing e-mails.

  1. Valid subject line
  2.

  3. Valid return address
  4.

  5. Identify sender
  6.

  7. Clearly defined opt-out option
  8.

  9. Honour 'remove' requests
  10.

  11. Look through the recipient's eyes
  12.

  13. Only use addresses that have opted-in
  14.

  15. Don't sell your list
  16.

  17. Attach privacy policy

I suggest you add one more…. Keep e-mail short and infrequent! It's a simple matter of respecting your audience.
