Just when you thought it was safe to get bullish on satellite radio, along comes a bearish Wall Street report. Days after a top U.S. regulator pledged to give a long-awaited green light to a merger of XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio, an analyst at Goldman Sachs reiterated its dreaded "sell" ratings on the companies' shares.

COMPLAINT ABOUT F-WORD IN SONG

The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) today released its decision concerning the afternoon broadcast of the song “Load Me Up” by Matthew Good Band, which included the f-word, on CJDJ-FM (Rock 102, Saskatoon). The CBSC’s Prairie Regional Panel concluded that the broadcast violated the Canadian Association of Broadcasters’ (CAB) Code of Ethics, but commended the station for the measures it took to resolve the issue.

Licensing of new radio stations to serve the Vancouver radio market
The Commission approves in part the application by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) to operate a new FM station in Vancouver. Specifically, the Commission authorizes the use of 88.1 MHz (channel 201C) by the CBC to operate an FM station in Vancouver. The Commission denies the CBC’s request as part of that application to operate an FM transmitter on Gabriola Island, British Columbia at 98.7 MHz (channel 254B). The Commission also denies the CBC’s application to amend the broadcasting licence for CBCV-FM Victoria, in order to operate an FM transmitter in Nanaimo, British Columbia at 104.1 MHz (channel 281B1).

NEWCAP TO PURCHASE 50% IN METRO

Newfoundland Capital Corporation announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Newcap Inc., has received approval from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) for the purchase of CTV Limited's 50% interest in Metro Radio Group Inc. for $8.5 million. Metro Radio Group Inc. operates CKUL-FM in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This transaction is expected to close within 60 days.
