BYRNESMEDIA CLIENTS’ APRIL FOOL’S JOKES

ByrnesMedia Release

We have a couple April Fool’s stories to pass along from our ByrnesMedia family members.

The Beach – Goderich

104.9 The Beach radio personalities Dale Roth & Kristylee Varley teamed up with Goderich Mayor Deb Shewfelt & OPP Staff Sargent Shawn Johnson to pull the legs of more than a few residents & business owners.

The Beach aired Mayor Deb Shewfelt declaring that a motion had been unanimously approved by Goderich Town Council to allow the street names to be changed in the town to improve tourism within the community. The motion was tabled in an effort to make things easier for tourists to find their way around “Canada's Prettiest Town.” It was suggested that visitors were familiar with where their friends lived or where local businesses were, but were unfamiliar with what actual street they were on.

Beach listeners were encouraged to be the first to publicly register their new street name by calling into the station. They then had to promise to pay the $75.00 fee for the new sign and a crew to put it up.

OPP Staff Sargent Shawn Johnson weighed in with the obvious concerns of Police, Fire and Ambulance readjusting to the new names and voiced the need for a bit more discussion on the issue.

The station's telephone lines were jammed all morning and listeners even resorted to visiting The Beach in person, with their money in hand.

The prank was revealed in the noon news package.

Heart FM – Woodstock

Heart FM teamed with the mayors of Woodstock and East-Zorra-Tavistock to propose the creation of an Oxford County “Superpower.”

Mayors Michael Harding and Don McKay told Heart FM they planned on asking their councils to support an amalgamation of Woodstock and East-Zorra-Tavistock.

The Mayors claimed a joining of forces would leverage more federal and provincial funding, which would amount to an extra 5-million dollars annually.

The idea came out of talks aimed at forming a policing partnership, but the mayors fell so in love with the idea that they even came up with a name for the new municipality – EZWood.

Heart also ran this as their web-poll.

The question was:

“Do you think Woodstock and Tavistock should amalgamate to cash in on more funding?”

The answers were:

A. Yes, it sounds like a good initiative.

B. No way, the mayors are out of their minds!

C. Undecided, I probably should have checked the calendar and realized it’s… APRIL FOOLS!

Believe it or not, half of the people still clicked on A and B!
