CTV PROPOSES TV STATION SALES TO GET CHUM DEAL APPROVED

AllAccess

CTVglobemedia has amended its proposed deal before the CRTC to buy CHUM Ltd. and is now offering to sell independent CHMI-TV (CITY-TV)/Winnipeg and is also proposing to sell its CKAL-TV (CITY-TV)/Calgary and CKEM-TV (CITY-TV)/Edmonton contingent on the CRTC rejecting Global TV's application to allow its independent CHCA-TV (CH)/Red Deer, AB local status in Calgary and Edmonton.

The last-minute proposal is aimed at smoothing the way for CTV's C$1.7 million takeover of CHUM by reducing the number of proposed TV duopolies created by the merger. Under the plan, CTV would end up with TV duopolies in Toronto (CTV affiliate CFTO-TV and independent CITY-TV) and Vancouver (CTV affiliate CIVI-TV and independent CKVU-TV (CITY-TV)). The merger came under fire in hearings at the CRTC for the proposed duopolies.
