RADIO GEARS UP FOR 'LIVE EARTH' CONCERTS

Mike Boyle – Radio and Records

Both satellite and terrestrial radio are gearing up for the "Live Earth: The Concerts for a Climate in Crisis" event, set for Saturday, July 7. The historic event will take place over 24 hours in eight cities on seven continents, with more than 150 artists performing.

XM Satellite Radio will be airing 27 hours of continuous Live Earth coverage and more than 90 hours of aggregate coverage, featuring complete, live broadcasts of every concert.

Over at Sirius Satellite Radio, in addition to airing all eight concerts, the satcaster's coverage will include live backstage interviews from New York and live commentary on the London concert.

Clear Channel Radio has also announced wall-to-wall coverage via its HD2 channels. Beginning at 7 a.m. ET on July 7 and ending at 7 a.m. on July 8, CCR will present uninterrupted Live Earth coverage in every one of its top 50 markets where HD2 is available.

"This coverage is a great demonstration of the additional programming flexibility offered by HD2 side channels," CCR executive VP of content development Tom Owens said. "Without disrupting usual programming, terrestrial stations can offer continuous wall-to-wall coverage of this tremendous concert event through an HD2 programming partner. This can only stimulate audience interest in HD Radio while enhancing terrestrial service."

Clear Channel Radio CHR/top 40 WHTZ (Z100)/New York MD/night personality Romeo and crosstown sister classic rock WAXQ (Q104) morning host Jim Kerr will be anchoring live coverage for their respective formats for Premiere Radio Networks from backstage at the Giants Stadium concert in East Rutherford, N.J., just outside New York City.
