THE FUTURE OF INTERNET RADIO
Will its success spell doom for podcasting (as we know it now) and more?
John C. Dvorak – PC Magazine
Over the past month or so, there has been a heated battle between the music industry and Internet radio about rights and fees. Actually, over the past decade, there has been nothing but trouble surrounding Internet radio. I think it's one of the reasons that podcasting emerged as an alternative to Internet radio. Look closely at podcasting, however; with the exception of the advanced auto-download via RSS aspect, it's actually just more Internet radio.

U.S. ADVERTISING SCATTER
Bridge Ratings Release
In 1995, before the Internet became a household word, advertising a product or service was a relatively simple procedure. Advertisers or their agents would put together a budget and determine how to apply that budget to the few key and historically effect media available: TV, radio, print. Over the last ten years, however, the pressure on U.S. advertisers has increased by virtue of the 'scattering' of consumers as use of television, radio and print has been subplanted by the Internet, email, text messaging, etc. Simply put, it has become much more complicated to apply advertising budgets that in many cases have not increased in size.

LAST STAND OF INTERNET RADIO?
Gilbert Cruz – Time
This past Tuesday, thousands of Internet radio stations found the perfect way to make their point about a recent decision to raise the royalty rates they pay — they simply shut down as part of what they called the "Day of Silence" protest. If the new rules go into effect as planned on July 15, the webcasters claim, there will no longer be niche streams like "Screamin' and Hollerin,'" "Ninja Tunes" or "The Cole Porter Songbook"--just three of the 320 channels available to listeners of AccuRadio, which is itself one of a legion of large, small, and miniscule providers of free streaming music. Supporters of the increase want to see struggling artists receive the money they say they deserve, and argue that the rules that were set up for a fledgling industry five years ago are no longer appropriate in an era when at least some of the stations are now owned by large corporations such as Yahoo!, AOL or RealNetworks.
