THE END OF THE RAVE AT THE END

Kevin Carter – Radio and Records

R&R has learned that 10 people have lost their jobs, including longtime PD/station manager Steve Weed, at Entercom CHR/top 40 KDND (107.9 The End)/Sacramento. The Morning Rave has also been canceled. The terminations come in the wake of last Friday's tragic death of Jennifer Strange, a 28-year-old mother of three who competed in the Morning Rave's water-drinking contest to win a Nintendo Wii game system. The other departed staffers include Morning Rave members Lukas, Maney, Trish Sweet, Carter and Fester, producer Liz Diaz, KDND promotions director Robin Pechota and two assistants.

As we know all too well by now, Strange was found dead in her home last Friday afternoon, just hours after she competed in the Morning Rave's "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest, which involved contestants drinking as many bottles of water as they could without going to the bathroom. Whoever held it the longest would receive a Nintendo Wii video game system. Preliminary autopsy results concluded that Strange showed signs that were consistent with water intoxication.

On Monday, Entercom/Sacramento VP/Market Manager John Geary posted a message (now gone) on The End's Web site, that read, in part, "First and foremost, our thoughts and sympathies go out to Jennifer's family and loved ones. I also want to assure you that the circumstances regarding this matter are being examined as thoroughly as possible. We are doing everything we can to deal with this difficult situation in a manner that is both respectful and responsible."
