CAB AND RADIO MEMBERS PRESENT A STRONG CASE AT THE RADIO REVIEW HEARINGS

The CAB and various radio broadcasters presented strong arguments to the CRTC in the hearing phase of the Review of Commercial Radio, held this week in Gatineau.
The private radio industry, represented by close to 20 radio groups throughout the week's proceedings, presented a strong and unified voice and emphasized the impact of the multitude of new competitive technologies on the radio sector, and the need for new and innovative approaches in dealing with Canadian content, CTD funding, and French Vocal Music quotas.
Private broadcasters also made clear to the Commission the idea that market entry can be controlled - the lynchpin of the current regulatory model - has fallen by the wayside in the digital and wireless age, and that it is time to rethink and retool the existing model of regulation, acknowledging that regulated radio services now directly compete with a growing number of new unregulated audio services.
Now that the hearing phase of the Review has concluded, interveners must file information requested by the Commission over the course of the hearings by Monday, May 29. The deadline for the final comment phase is June 12.
