CRTC TO LOOK AT CHANGING TECHNOLOGY AND CANADIAN BROADCASTING

Broadcaster

Federal Heritage Minister Bev Oda says the Canadian broadcasting system needs a major updating; she's called for a review of government regulations and a determination of what impacts rapidly changing technology will have on the industry.

Oda, speaking at the Banff Television Festival, noted that "Canadians, especially young Canadians, are increasingly moving away from traditional media sources and exploring options like iPods and the Slingbox", referring to new digital delivery and distribution products currently available in the market.

The review will be the first major look at the country's TV business since the 1999 TV Policy was released by the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission.

Policy and regulatory looks at issues surrounding digital delivery of TV content, the anticipated costs of a transition to digital TV and high-definition formats, as well as an anticipated review of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the Canadian Television Fund, are all expected soon.

Oda wants the CRTC to deliver its findings by December 14.
