CAB CELEBRATES 80TH ANNIVERSARY

Broadcaster

2006 marks the 80th Anniversary of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB). Established by the pioneers of Canadian broadcasting on January 28 1926, the CAB was formed to defend the interests of Canada's private broadcasters and to ensure the ongoing vitality and strength of the Canadian broadcasting system.

The objectives set forth in the Letters Patent by the founders speak for themselves, and remain true today:

"To foster and promote development of the art of aural and visual broadcasting in all its forms, to protect the members of the (Association) in every lawful and proper manner from injustice and unjust exactions and to do all things necessary and proper to encourage and promote customs and practices which will strengthen and maintain the broadcasting industry to the end that it may best serve the public."

The CAB has become one of Canada's foremost professional industry associations, representing more than 600 private radio stations, television stations, and specialty, pay and pay-per-view television services from coast to coast.

The Canadian broadcasting system is now a 5 billion dollar industry employing over 21,000 people, offering a variety of programming in English, French, and many other languages including Aboriginal languages. Private broadcasting enjoys by far the largest share of the market, and Canadian programming broadcast by those services attracts the predominant share of the total audience for Canadian content.
