CAB APPEARS BEFORE HR COMMITTEE TO OPPOSE PRIVATE MEMBER'S BILL ON REPLACEMENT WORKERS

CAB President and CEO Glenn O'Farrell appeared before the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities on Thursday, December 7th to oppose both the substance of Bill C-257, the Private Members Bill which proposes to amend the Canada Labour Code, as well as the process that has hurried the Bill through the committee stage.

Sponsored by Bloc Québecois MP Richard Nadeau, Bill C-257 is of particular concern to broadcasters, as it proposes significant restrictions that would prohibit management in federally regulated industries from assuming the responsibilities of workers in the case of a strike or work stoppage.

The CAB, along with other members of the business community, will continue to track the progress of this bill, and will provide members of the Standing Committee and other MPs with a full briefing on the potential negative impacts of the Bill.

In a positive development, the committee voted at the December 7 meeting to extend the time under which MPs could examine the Bill, and call on more witnesses from both industry and labour.
