Something funny is happening in Europe. While Apple Computer is still selling iPods by the boatload, more and more young people are ditching Apple's offerings in favor of Sony Ericsson's new Walkman phones. "I always carry my phone with me, but the iPod is an extra," Rachel Slack, a 26-year-old Londoner, told one of my colleagues recently. Since buying a Sony Ericsson with enough memory for about 100 songs, she says, "it made sense to just use my phone for both."

During that episode of the call-in program, the host discussed, among other things, the case of Abdul Rahman, the Afghan who had been condemned to death for converting from Islam to Christianity.

Increases funding for Canadian content development

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) issued today three public notices flowing from its review of its Commercial Radio Policy 1998. The first notice, entitled Commercial Radio Policy 2006, deals with a number of issues, including Canadian content and French-language vocal music. The second focuses on the treatment of radio applications in small markets and the third sets out certain changes to the Commission’s digital radio policy.

FMC RELEASES STUDY ON LOCAL RADIO AND DIVERSITY

The Future of Music Coalition (FMC) has released its extensive report on radio station ownership consolidation. Entitled "False Premises, False Promises: A Quantitative History of Ownership Consolidation in the Radio Industry," the study claims that consolidation has led to fewer programming choices for listeners, as well as harming the listening public and music & radio industry employees.

XM Canada and Air Canada today announced a multi-year agreement to supply music content to all of Air Canada's customers.
Effective March 1, 2007, XM Canada will program all audio content currently provided by the existing "enRouteFM" channels. The new content, which will be branded as being supplied by XM, will be made available on both the existing legacy in-flight entertainment system and the new touch-screen, seatback in-flight entertainment systems being installed on all Air Canada aircraft.
