In a letter sent last week, the CRTC responded to the CAB's first annual Report on Diversity in Broadcasting. The Commission commended the CAB's initiatives to address diversity, including the development of the Diversity in Broadcasting website, the ongoing commitment to focus on diversity at the CAB's annual Convention, the promotion of a range of Gold Ribbon Awards celebrating diversity in programming, and the review of the industry codes.
The Commission noted that while strides were made in communication and outreach efforts, it also expects to see plans for specific initiatives aimed at the under-representation of Aboriginal and Asian-Canadians in television programming, included in the CAB's second annual report, as well as those of the individual broadcasters, in order to evaluate the extent to which the industry's efforts result in improvements on-air.
