According to the latest consumer survey by BRIDGE RATINGS, the number of songs stored on MP3 players varies by the amount of weekly radio listening. The study found that for persons aged 12-64, the average amount of time spent listening to radio (terrestrial, satellite, and internet) per week is 34 hours.

CRTC RESPONDS TO CAB'S 2005-06 REPORT ON DIVERSITY

In a letter sent last week, the CRTC responded to the CAB's first annual Report on Diversity in Broadcasting. The Commission commended the CAB's initiatives to address diversity, including the development of the Diversity in Broadcasting website, the ongoing commitment to focus on diversity at the CAB's annual Convention, the promotion of a range of Gold Ribbon Awards celebrating diversity in programming, and the review of the industry codes.

MEDIABASE REPORTING PLATFORM CONTINUES TO GROW

As you know, MEDIABASE and R&R parted ways after the latter was purchased by VNU.
So, on AUGUST 6th, MEDIABASE debuted a new reporting platform for monitored and non-monitored stations, which includes 22 airplay charts. These charts are already appearing on Mediabase.com, AllAccess.com as well as a number of industry and consumer publications and websites.

XM TUNES INTO FCC TROUBLE
The satellite radio company's stock gets hit after some of its plug-and-play radios fail to pass muster again

Investors have not liked the noise surrounding XM Satellite Radio. On Aug. 11, XM (XMSR ) shares declined 3%, to $10.84, after the company revealed that the Federal Communications Commission had requested additional information about its plug-and-play radios. The company has suspended production and shipment of eight radios, including the Sportscaster and MyFi series, until it can bring the devices into compliance.

RADIO ADS DRIVE DOMESTIC AUTO SALES

A new study conducted by The Media Audit, along with its research partner Ipsos, has shown that domestic auto makers may be more effective in stimulating sales if they increased their advertising on the radio. The study of 17,395 adults planning to buy a vehicle in the next year showed that better than 1 in 5 of them are heavy radio listeners. The Media Audit also found that heavy radio listeners are skewed towards domestic vehicle purchases while heavy Internet users are skewed towards foreign vehicles. The chart below illustrates that of all the major media, radio had the highest proportion of planned vehicle purchasers.

In the latest example of how record oil prices are driving virtually every aspect of that province's red-hot economy, federal broadcast regulators decided yesterday to allow five new FM radio stations in the Calgary area, increasing the number of local commercial stations on that dial to 14.

EMI GROUP PLC has announced that it is dropping its $4.6 billion bid for WARNER MUSIC GROUP "for the time being." The WALL STREET JOURNAL reports that the decision follows a EUROPEAN Court ruling critical of the SONY MUSIC/BMG merger that effectively "clouds the already murkey waters" surrounding such deals. However, EMI did leave the door open a bit for future consideration, saying, ''The board will review this position in the light of future developments.''

According to a new study from Bridge Ratings, 45% of 2,500 randomly surveyed Americans learn about new music from listening to traditional radio stations. While that's well above the percentage of those who said P2Ps and Internet radio stations gave them the knowledge of new music before any other source, more than 50% of those surveyed in Bridge's previous survey said traditional radio was their No. 1 source for new music.
