BOB, JACK, MEET HANK IN INDY
Ken Tucker – Billboard
Bob, Jack, meet your country cousin, Hank. Emmis adult top 40 WENS Indianapolis flipped to country hybrid “97.1 Hank FM, He plays anything country” at noon on March 24. It’s believed to be the first country station to employ the all-encompassing format.
“Hank is a different kind of radio station because he plays anything (and we mean anything) country,” a release from Emmis says.
“From the New, to the Known, to the Legends. If it’s a great country song, Hank FM will play it,” the release goes on to say.
Artists on the station run the gamut from Tim McGraw to Johnny Cash to Conway Twitty to Gretchen Wilson.
The station is currently running jockless and no staffers have been let go at this time, though Emmis/Indianapolis OM David Edgar says decisions are still being made.
Susquehanna country WFMS Indianapolis is the longtime market and format leader. Interestingly, Susquehanna recently flipped oldies WGLD to "104.5 Jack FM."
From the mid- to late '90s, Susquehanna's WGRL (the Bear) served as a flanker to WFMS.
