Two popular Quebec radio hosts have interviewed Karla Homolka and her lawyer Sylvie Bordelais in a remarkable prank phone call to be aired today.
CKOI hosts Sebastien Trudel, 24, and Marc-Antoine Audette, 25 -- known to their listeners as the "Masked Avengers" -- called Bordelais yesterday posing as Quebec's justice minister and his assistant.
The "assistant" told Bordelais the "minister" wanted to make a statement on the case today and needed to clear up some issues with Homolka and Bordelais.
The lawyer then contacted Homolka and set up a conference call with Trudel and Audette.
The conference call, a tape of which was obtained exclusively by Sun Media, lasted 15 minutes and continued well after the hosts fessed up to the prank.
Incredibly, Bordelais continued to entertain their questions after their identities were revealed, and she seriously pursued their offer of a job for Homolka as a radio commentator on judicial affairs.
But it is Homolka who does most of the speaking, all of it in French, when she believes she's talking to the senior government official.
BETRAYED CONFIDENCE
Among the highlights:
* Homolka confirmed she has never lived in Longueuil, as had been widely and erroneously reported by Quebec media yesterday.
* Homolka said her confidante and employer, Richer Lapointe, offered her help because "he felt rejected when he was young" and that he betrayed her confidence. She adds that Richer never tried to blackmail her, as had been insinuated in a front-page story in yesterday's Montreal Gazette newspaper.
* Bordelais said no one from the Quebec justice department is involved in Homolka's case, prompting mock concern from the minister's assistant: "Oh, my God. That's not good."
* The fake minister asked if other excerpts from Richer's secretly taped conversations, like those published in yesterday's Sun, will come to light "and embarrass us." Homolka replies, "I have no idea."
* Homolka said she wants to rebuild her life and she has remained indoors since the story broke.
* She also denied any contact with convicted criminals.
Near the end of the call, Bordelais remarked: "I think I'm being set up."
The radio hosts then admitted their true identities and offered Homolka a radio job.
Shortly after, Bordelais replied: "I hope your job offer is serious. I told you my client is looking for a job."
The radio duo are heard by more than one million listeners in the Montreal area.
INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE
They have pulled similar prank calls on dozens of influential people.
Posing as Celine Dion, the hosts had a long interview with Britney Spears. They also suckered Don Cherry by pretending to be hockey goalie Jose Theodore.
Asked if they felt bad about targeting Homolka, Trudel said: "I don't feel guilty in any way. We won't start pitying Karla Homolka. She's not a poor, desperate woman. She's a serial killer. We don't understand why people would pity her."
The Homolka-Bordelais gag is scheduled to be aired in segments this afternoon starting at 4:20 p.m. The station can be heard online at ckoi.com.
